| 7 Day Tlikikila River Float - Lake Clark National Park |
| Tlikikila River |
|
People have called the flight through Lake Clark Pass one of the most stunning in Alaska. It takes you through a rugged canyon walled on either side by dramatic peaks, tumbling glaciers, and spectacular waterfalls. Dense green vegetation clings to the steep hillsides in stark contrast to the white glaciated basins above and the chalky Tlikikila river cuts a wide and braided swath beneath it all. This is Alaska at its finest, the epitome of wilderness and the essence of Lake Clark National Park.
The one way to top a flight through Lake Clark Pass is to float through it. To ride these silky waters from the summit to Lake Clark is to take part in a journey that few ever have, and to behold the surrounding beauty from the river itself is a treat like no other in Alaska.
In a plane equipped with floats, our skilled pilot will land us on Summit Lake just beneath the glaciers at the headwaters of the Tlikikila. After he is done shuttling us and our gear, he'll leave us to the task at hand, the float to Lake Clark, and as the mist settles from his final take off, the roar of the propeller will be quickly replaced by the silence of solitude. Here the adventure begins!
We'll spend the first day portaging gear to floatable water and familiarizing ourselves with the dynamics that have helped to create the beauty around us. We'll explore the glacier to the south of our first camp. You'll be astounded by the raw power as we sit atop the glacier, listen to its rumblings, and learn about the features it has created.
By the 2nd or 3rd evening, we'll reach the confluence of the North Fork where we will make camp. From this spectacular location, we may spend time hiking up the braided North Fork in search of waterfalls, moose, bears, and sheep.
We'll start the next day with a hot beverage and before the heat has left our bodies' core, we'll be getting face shots of frigid water as we slam the standing waves along the rivers crux. After a camp beneath 4000' granite cliffs, we will spend the last day floating to Lake Clark. As we enter the lake, keep in mind that in the Fall, Sockeye Salmon spawn in huge numbers in the milky waters beneath the boat, and from that point we are nearly 200 miles from saltwater! This is an unparalleled Alaskan adventure! |
