Day Itinerary
1
Anchorage - Port Alsworth, Lake Clark National Park
Morning departure from Anchorage for a scenic flight through the famous Lake Clark Pass. During the flight you will view the Alaska and Aleutian mountain ranges as well as Mount Iliamna and Redoubt-active volcanoes. Upon arrival at Port Alsworth you will be transferred to the lodge. The gateway to this national park is its namesake, Lake Clark. Considered by many to be the most scenic lake in all of Alaska, Lake Clark is also home to a wonderful variety of fish. In the afternoon you might try to sast for lake trout, grayling, pike, Dolly Varden, and sockeye salmon in these glorious turquoise waters. The mountains and blue sky provide the perfect backdrop for a day of angling.
2
Mulchatna Caribou Herd Viewing
After breakfast at the lodge, we will depart across the Nushagak River drainage. The tundra below us is dotted with thousands of small lakes. Be on the lookout for moose and caribou as we land near the summer grazing range of the Mulchatna caribou herd. This herd is said to be the largest in Alaska and numbers around 150,000 animals. Caribou are primarily viewed in the western quadrant of the preserve. Moose roam throughout but are most commonly found in muskeg or boggy areas as they graze upon aquatic plants. Dall sheep scale the cliffs and mountain sides of the park, eagles, and peregrine falcons circle above riding thermals from one vantage point to another. Predators include wolves black and brown (grizzly) bear, foxes and wolverines. Ground squirrel, marmot, beavers and martin are also visible. We return to the lodge in the late afternoon.
3
Lake Clark National Park Flightseeing
A full day devoted to fly through the different areas of Lake National Park and Preserve, touted as Alaska's undiscovered National Park, and over turquoise-colored Lake Clark. As we follow the Tlikakia River into a narrow mountain pass, the landscape evolves into jagged, granite cliffs lined with hanging glaciers. Fly along a path of fire and ice as we pass glaciers on our left and the volcanoes Mt. Redoubt and Mt. Spur on our right. Redoubt's last explosive activity was in 1989-1990. Enjoy a visit to a historic trappers cabin, now maintained by the National Park Service, on beautiful Twin Lakes. Lunch will be served at the edge of this turquoise colored, alpine lake surrounded by mountains on three sides. A short flight will then take us to Turquoise Lake for an easy but inspiring hike through a valley surrounded by spires on one side and cliffs on the other. While en-route back to the lodge on a clear day, we can enjoy airborne views of the Alaska Range and the largest mountain in North America, Mount McKinley, which stands 20,320 feet above sea level.
4
Lake Clark Day Hike
From the lodge we will walk on day hikes to the Lake Clark National Park Service Visitor's Center, the Tanalian Falls, and Kontrashibuna Lake. The topography at Lake Clark makes all kinds of trekking, whether rambling through the tundra, circumnavigating a lake, or exploring a black forest. Today we hike behind the Homestead Cafi and follow the trail up a steep hill close to a mile. The trail then slopes downward and comes to a junction with the Tanalian Falls Trail, the one maintained trail in the park. We walk toward the beaver dams to get above the pond. The trail rejoins near the dam, and follows it back to the trailhead. We keep an eye out for moose, beaver, lynx, and waterfowl during the hike.
5
Lake Clark Day Hike
We begin the day with a hearty breakfast and hike to a spectacular waterfall and upper blue green Kontrashibuna Lake above the falls. The Lake winds into the Chigmit Mountains, whose peaks average 4,500 to 6,000 feet (not including two volcanoes within the park!). At 15 miles long and three quarters of a mile across at its widest, the lake seems more like a clear-running river than a lake. It is glacially fed, in fact the water is clear enough to cause vertigo. A fireside smoked Salmon lunch will be served during the day. In the late afternoon we return to the lodge.
6
Port Alsworth - Anchorage
After a delicious breakfast enjoy the scenic flight back to Anchorage or Kenai.
